Can I dye and then highlight my hair?

I've highlighted my naturally medium brown hair several times (using a cap) and now it is almost entirely blonde. I want to bring back my own colour and make it look more like it did when I first started the process.

Can i dye my hair brown again and then highlight afterwards? How long should I wait in between? Also, Can I just use a semi-permanent natural instincts dye so that if the base brown colour ends up too dark it will fade? Or will a semi-permanent this interfere with the highlights.

Please respond if you have professional experience or have done this with your own hair.

You can absolutely do it. It does, however, depend on how healthy your hair is. If your hair is dry and brittle then I would say use the semi color. If not go for the permanent. It will last longer and look better. Get a color with a natural or neutral base tone. As long as it doesn't say "ash" on the box you should be fine. Mix a VERY tiny amount of the color with the activator and do a small section on the bottom, back of your hair. This way if it is too dark you can go get another color and use it and no one will ever notice that one little section. the only affect I can see your putting a color then a highlight is that it may take longer for the highlights to get light enough and your hair could be dry afterwards. Get a good deep "PROTEIN" (not moisturizing") treatment for afterwards.

One other route you can also try: put low lights in your hair. All that is is "highlighting" your hair with your brown color. That way you have more brown like you want and it will sort of "camoflage" your darker roots! It's a lot easier on your hair, it won't be as expensive, and if it's not enough you can just do the color and highlight over it! Good Luck!!!

Yes, if there is a Sally's nearby you can get one that I really like. It's called Aphogee Two Minute Keratin Reconstructor. It's usaully around $1.50 - $2.00. If you don't have a Sally's you can get Joico K-Pak at hair salons. Glad I could help! And thanks for the best answer vote! Report It

I have done something similar like that to my hair, but instead of dying your whole head dark again, buy a cap and pull strands through almost all of the holes and just color those strands dark again, that way you won't over do it w/ the coloring. Also that won't make you go into shock w/ your whole head of hair going dark again. And you will look like you just got your hair highlighted for the first time.

If you want to darken it all except have a streak that's lighter? (or even several streaks) I would do it all at the same time. Take some of the hair that is going to be lighter and seperate it. Put a rubber band over it, and you can even put a plastic bag over part of it. Use little sandwich baggie and rubber bands.

Just be real careful and dye the rest dark, then right at the end, if you want the streak a little darker than it is now, put the dye on, but wash it out real quick when that hair starts to darken up. When I have used hair dyes they will wash out with water to stop the dying action.

Anyway, if you want it all dark except maybe some of the tips lighter, you could kinda do the same thing, washing the dye off the tips before they get too dark, then leave the dye on the rest till it sets in good.

Keep an eye on it in the mirror, so you don't get a shock when it's done. hee hee.

I like the other answer about getting a cap. That might work too. The worst thing would be if it ends up looking kinda splotchy, you know what I mean?

I have blond hair and when I have tried to darken it up sometimes there are still spots that are lighter, but it was, you know spotty. It wouldn't look right, so I would have to go over it again. (and sometimes I would have already used all the dye or thought I was done.) Anyway, if you have dyed your hair before, you already know about that.

I'm not a cosmotologist, just someone who gets tired of blonde jokes all the time and grabs some dye.

yes, but its always advisable to wait atleast 1 week before applying more hair dye. while you are waiting make sure to deep condition your hair due to the damage dyes cause.
