I have highlighted my hair blonde a few times and it's pretty much blonde all over. Now my roots have started coming through and i want to dye my whole hair with a blonde dye without the expense of getting highlights done. But how exactly do I do that, can I just bleach it all out normally or do I have to go brown first to cover up the highlights then bleach to strip all the colour? If it helps some, my natural colour is medium/dark brown.

Start by selecting the blonde dye you want to be using from now on, and dye your roots only. Then, if there's a color variation between your newly dyed roots and previously highlighted ends, you can simply dye them to match the roots. If you need to slightly deepen the ends to match, use the same colour but with added warmth (eg golden) added to it. This is to prevent the ends going greenish.

The reason dying your ends brown first won't work is because the lightening dye you'll use on you roots will work, but your ends wont lighten because they've already been dyed. It's a basic rule in hairdressing that tint (ie permenant or semi permenant haircolor) will not lighten previously tinted hair.

If you dye it brown and then bleach the lot, you will end up with a terrible colour and your hair will become very brittle on the bits that have been bleached and dyed too much (the ends). You can get kits to touch in the roots. This is cheaper and quicker and saves the rest of your hair.

IF I UNDERSTAND YOU CORRECTLY YOU WANT TO STAY BLOND BUT NO HIGHLIGHTS AND YOU HAVE NATURAL BROWN HAIR. YOU DYE YOUR HAIR A LITTLE DARKER THAN WHAT IT IS NOW AND THAT WILL HELP WITH THE HIGHLIGHTS AND IT IS MORE FASHIONABLE BECAUSE PEOPLE WITH BLOND HAIR GET A BIT DARKER IN THE WINTER MONTHS. I'VE DONE IT FOR YEARS AND NO ONE EVER GUESSED.
